RESURGENCE

2017. Digital video with sound.

I set myself on fire in an abandoned factory to make this work. Carl Jung used the ancient practice of alchemy as the basis for his theory of individuation. In particular, he defines the 'black work' in psychological terms as "a moment of maximum despair, that is a prerequisite to personal development". Alchemically, the black work involves burning and dissolving. When it was made, the work already raised questions about authenticity. Are the flames real or CGI? With the arrival of AI and the dawn of an era in which the line between reality and fiction is more blurred than ever before, this tension is heightened.
